Are tax relief companies a scam?

We name no firms and take no referrals. What we can tell you is which claims the IRS contradicts.

This page names no company, rates none, and this site takes no referral fee from any. That is not modesty; it is the only position from which the question can be answered honestly, and it is why the answer below is about claims rather than about firms.

The most useful test is not reputational. It is whether a claim contradicts something the IRS publishes.

A promise to settle the debt for a small fraction of it. The IRS states it "generally approves an offer in compromise when the amount you offer represents the most we can expect to collect within a reasonable period of time", weighing ability to pay, income, expenses and asset equity. Nobody outside the IRS knows that figure before the IRS computes it, so a number offered before then is not a forecast of anything.

A statement that you are eligible. The IRS decides eligibility on your full financial position. It states plainly on its own offer page: "The Offer in Compromise Program is not for everyone."

A claim that hiring someone improves the outcome. No IRS source supports it. What the IRS does state is that enrolled agents, attorneys and certified public accountants all have unlimited practice rights before it — equivalent authority, not better odds.

An urgency claim with a timeframe attached. The IRS publishes no interval between a notice and a levy other than the 30-day floor in section 6331(d)(2), and publishes no rate at which any notice is followed by enforcement. An urgency figure has no source behind it because there is no source.

Two things you can verify for free before paying anyone. The IRS publishes a directory of federal tax return preparers with credentials, and it funds Low Income Taxpayer Clinics that represent people for free or a small fee. And whoever you engage, the IRS uses Form 2848 to authorise them — a firm that cannot explain that form is not the one.

This site published invented ratings for five real, named companies until 2026-08-17. That is why there is no ranking here and why /best-tax-resolution-firms/ explains its own absence.

What this page does not say

  • This page makes no claim about the prevalence of misconduct in the tax relief industry, because no source read for it establishes one. It tests claims against what the IRS publishes and stops there.

The records this answer comes from

This page exists because no single one of those answers the question on its own. Real demand, no page answers it, and the honest answer is a category-level test rather than a judgement about any firm. Answering it without naming a firm keeps it Tier 2 rather than Tier 4.
