Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return)
The paper route to any transcript type. Useful mainly where the online account is not available.
Full Definition
Form 4506-T requests a transcript. The IRS states it can be used to request "any of the transcripts: tax return, tax account, wage and income, record of account and verification of non-filing".
The IRS's own ordering of routes puts it third. It states you may register to use Individual Online Account to view, print or download all transcript types; that if you cannot register or prefer not to, you may order a tax return transcript or a tax account transcript through Get transcript by mail or by calling 800-908-9946, allowing 5 to 10 calendar days; and that you may also request any transcript type by submitting Form 4506-T.
Transcripts are partially masked. The IRS states the format "better protects taxpayer data by partially masking personally identifiable information", while financial data remains fully visible. Because the taxpayer identification number is masked, the form has a customer file number field that will display on the transcript instead — which is how a lender or representative matches it to a file.
One collection use is specific. The IRS states the Collection Statute Expiration Date is found in the Transactions section of an account transcript, and names Form 4506-T as one way to get one.
What to do next
Try the Individual Online Account first — the IRS states it covers all transcript types and the mail routes cover only two, with 5 to 10 calendar days for delivery.
