Tax Account Transcript

The transcript that shows what happened to an account after filing, including the collection statute date.

Full Definition

A tax account transcript shows what the IRS did with an account, as distinct from what was on the return.

The IRS describes it as showing "basic data such as filing status, taxable income, and payment types", and — the part that matters in a collection context — "changes made after you filed your original return".

That is the difference from a tax return transcript, which the IRS states shows most line items from the original return as filed and "doesn't show changes made after you filed".

Availability differs by route. The IRS states the account transcript is generally available for the current and NINE prior tax years through Individual Online Account, but only the current and THREE prior tax years through Get transcript by mail or by calling 800-908-9946.

For anyone working out how long the IRS has left to collect, this is the document. The IRS states the Collection Statute Expiration Date is found in the Transactions section of an account transcript, under a three-digit transaction code with a date below it — and that "generally, this date is the CSED plus any time we added by law". It adds that many events may impact a CSED and that you may contact it to verify the last day it can collect for a specific period.

What to do next

Get it through Individual Online Account rather than by mail if the years in question go back more than three — the mail and phone routes are limited to the current and three prior years.
